WiFi Information

WiFi service is now available in Boynton Beach!

Users can access the internet at a WiFi service area, or "hot spot", if their laptop or PDA has a wireless card. The cards, which can be purchased from an electronics or computer supply store and are easy to install, are often built-in to newer devices.

The Boynton Beach WiFi outdoor network will include 12 hot spots across the downtown area upon completion that will blanket up to 70% of the CRA area.

Q: What do I need to access the wireless network?
A: A laptop or PDA with a wireless 802.11 b or g network card.

Q: If I don't have a wireless card, what do I need to purchase?
A: Wireless cards can be purchased from any electronics or computer supply store. You will need an 802.11 b/g or dual band wireless card for your device.

Q: Can I access the WiFi network in a building within the service area?
A: No. The WiFi network is optimized for outdoor use. Although some users may be able to connect to the system from inside a building located near a hot spot, the service is not intended to compete with commercially available internet services and should not replace existing internet access.

Q: Will I need to use a password or set my computer to a special setting to access the network?
A: No passwords or special settings are required.

Q: Is the WiFi network secure?
A: No. The network is not secured, which means that sensitive personal or financial information sent across the network will not be encrypted. As a result, we recommend that you install a personal firewall and anti-virus software to protect your laptop or other electronic device.
